First Steps To Choosing a College
By Maeve Donohue
For juniors, it's getting to be that time of year where the questions, “where are you going to college?” and “what are you going to study?” are constantly being asked. College can be a scary thought, there are so many majors to choose from, lots of colleges to look at, and tons of things to think about when applying.
A way to make choosing a college easier on yourself is to start brainstorming now. You don’t have to start touring schools or emailing people yet. Of course, if you want to start doing that now you can. But start small, like making a list of schools and majors you like.
Four Ways to Make Choosing a College Less Stressful:
Make a list of schools you like.
Visit college websites, look at the majors they offer, check tuition fees, and start writing down schools that interest you. Put down in-state colleges, out of state colleges, and some safety schools.
Make a list of subjects you may want to major in.
Notice which classes you enjoy the most. Are they art classes, or academic? If you don’t want to study an academic or an art major, there are so many others, like business, politics, or economic.
Watch YouTube videos.
There are tons of videos on YouTube of people talking about the colleges they attend. There’s also dorm tours, campus tours, and even videos where they take you to class with them.
Don’t get too stressed.
Remember that you don’t have to choose a major and a school right now. There are colleges that let you enter without choosing a major. You can also change majors, if you don’t want to study your specific major anymore.
Choosing a college doesn’t have to be stressful. There are plenty of ways you can begin your college search without feeling pressured or stressed. Keep in mind you have many options and opportunities to find out which college is the best for you.
