In response to President Trump’s comments about the events in Charlottesville, Tennessee Congressman Steve Cohen is reportedly going to introduce articles of impeachment once he returns to Congress. Cohen, along with 23 other house Democrats had previously filed a resolution, but it was unsuccessful. Cohen isn’t the first Representative to do this, Brad Sherman, a California Democrat and Al Green, a Texas Democrat also filed to have Trump impeached. However, because the Republican party controls a vast majority of the Congress and Senate, it is very unlikely that and resolutions for impeachment will actually go through.
Cohen isn’t being unrealistic for filing these resolutions. His basis is predominantly the Charlottesville riots, the fact that POTUS completely ignored the real issue of racism and the fact that there are actual Nazis, and instead decided to tweet that there are issues on both sides all whilst pretending that the whole shebang never happened. Personally, I don’t think that Cohen is wrong for wanting to impeach Donald, however let’s say this actually works and good ole’ Donny Boy gets impeached. What happens then? I got two words for you: Mike Pence. And do you know what comes with Mike Pence? Conversion therapy. Now I’m not saying that I would like for Trump to stay in office, but I am saying that I think there should be some kind of backup plan so that we don’t get stuck with Pence.
Of course the articles of impeachment aren’t going to be in motion anytime soon. Cohen is waiting until enough candidates who support the impeachment get voted into Congress in 2018 to make his dream come true in 2019. As much as I’d like for Trump to be impeached, I don’t think that this is ever going to happen. Considering that majority of Congress and Senate is Republican, and it takes ⅔ to have these articles pass, it just doesn’t seem likely. I’d like to be an optimist in this situation, however when it comes to politics, optimism doesn’t get you far. It’s better to understand and know the facts, and just be ready to take on whatever is thrown at us. So I think we just need to stick the next few years out, and then when 2020 rolls around, we vote Yeezus into office. Who’s with me?
