2017 Fashion Trends: A Review
By Maeve Donohue
2017 had its ups and downs, but anyone could tell you that the fashion we saw in 2017 was very innovative, new, and sometimes controversial. I’ve picked out some of the biggest fashion trends I noticed this past year.
Fuzzy Sandals: Combining winter and summer, different types of fluffy sandals were worn throughout all the seasons of 2017. Tons of different designers added fluffy sandals to their collections, including Steve Madden and Puma.
Corsets: Kylie Jenner brought back corsets, layering them over large t-shirts. I personally hate this look. I feel as if it is combining a plain piece of clothing with something that was meant to be worn with more detail, as corsets were worn in the 16th century, with period style dresses. Corsets have also proven to be bad for your lungs and breathing.
Sweatshirt Dresses: A trend of wearing a large sweatshirt or hoodie made its debut in 2017. Celebrities like Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Kourtney Kardashian were seen pairing the big hoodies with thigh high boots. I can totally get behind this look, as it seems incredibly comfortable.
Newsboy Hats: Newsboy hats were seen on almost everyone, including Bella Hadid and even Harry Styles. Newsboy caps took the place of berets, sun-hats, and beanies this year.
Exposed Tights: This was a trend that I even saw at NSA. People everywhere were layering fishnets under shorts, ripped jeans, and denim skirts. A trend that caught on later in the year was to pull your tights so they rose above the top of your pants.
Cropped Sweatshirts: Sweatshirts joined the long list of clothing that was getting cropped. This time, the sweatshirts seen being worn by many were cropped so high that it was basically wearing sleeves. I’m not a big fan of this, since it doesn’t look like it would serve the right purpose of a sweatshirt, and frankly, I think it looks weird.
Return of 80s style: In 2017, the 80s were brought back, through things like Stranger Things, makeup trends, and clothing. Trends such as shoulder pads, denim on denim, and the Nike Cortez made their comeback in 2017.
It’s clear that 2017 was a big year for fashion. Trends were created, and some were brought back. We can only look forward to what 2018 fashion will include.
