Review of CHANEL’s fall/winter 2017 collection, designed by Karl Lagerfeld
By Maeve Donohue
At Paris Fashion Week earlier this year, the CHANEL fall/winter 2017 collection debuted, designed and presented by Karl Lagerfeld, CHANEL’s head creative designer. The collection was stunning, and after the show, Lagerfeld was awarded the Médaille Grand Vermeil de la Ville (Paris’ most honorable award) by Paris’ dynamic mayor, Anne Hidalgo.
Lagerfeld showed his imagination and talent in a collection of coats, dresses, and suits, accenting each piece with a coordinating pork pie hat. Rounded sleeves, floral detailing, and different kinds of fabric were incorporated in the pieces, creating a beautiful collection that brought new ideas to the fashion world.
Look Review
Look 1: One of the first looks to walk in the show was a straightforward pantsuit, with a small satin bow on the front. The placing of the bow and cuff sizes were simple touches that added dimension to the look.
Look 2: This look has a vintage feel, with the fabric used and the checkered print. The tall boots contrasted with the bulkiness of the fabric, and Lagerfeld used pockets to accent the front of the coat.
Look 3: Lagerfeld contrasted this beautiful coat by using a boiled wool fabric with a glossy black fabric for the collar and cuffs. The use of contrasting fabrics brought the look dimension, and gave the coat a sophisticated feel.
Look 4: The flowy fabric used for the skirt is the perfect opposite to the boiled wool we see many times in this collection. The brick red color of the skirt brings out hints of the same color in the jacket, which shows the two pieces as one look. Lagerfeld used the rounded shoulders and sleeves on the jacket, which is seen in many pieces of this collection.
Look 5: Lagerfeld used the rounded shoulders we see in many other looks, and this time cropped the sleeve to elbow length. The top of this dress is the main focus, a sparkly blue fabric gives off a starry feel, paired with a simple navy skirt.
Look 6: The last look of the show, and my personal favorite, this white dress is very feminine and modern, with the rounded hemline and puffy flowers on the sleeves. This is the only look in the show without a hat, Lagerfeld instead put a flowery veil on the back of the model’s head. The placement of the flowers at the bottom of the dress gives the dress dimension, and Lagerfeld’s choice of one fabric makes the dress look simplistic, yet elegant.
Overall, Karl Lagerfeld’s CHANEL fall/winter collection amazed many, including myself. Once again, CHANEL has proved itself in the fashion world, with a stunning, innovative collection.
