Taylor Swift’s Reputation Singles: From Worst to Best.
In August, Taylor Swift announced the upcoming release of her album reputation. The album marks a change in Swift’s persona, from a preppy songstress to a wannabe femme fatale. Three singles have been released so far, and most of them have been unimpressive. So without further ado, here’s a ranking, from worst to best, of Swift’s singles:
Number Three: “Look What You Made Me Do”
Swift disses the celebrities who are responsible for eroding her good-girl image, referencing the 2016 Kim Kardashian/Kanye West scandal, and her rivalry with Katy Perry. She tries to make herself sound tough and unforgiving, but it just doesn’t work. When I first listened to the song, I burst out laughing when Swift uttered the now famous line, “I’m sorry, the old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now. Why? ‘Cause she’s dead.” It’s just so weird to hear the former princess of country music utter something like that in an attempt to be edgy.
The lyrics characterise her as an immature and petty person. Swift claims to have gotten “smarter” and “harder in the nick of time”, but she hasn’t. If she really did mature, then she wouldn’t have released this song. It’s time for Swift to let bygones be bygones, and move on with her life.
Number Two: “...Ready For It?”
There’s isn’t much to say about the song. It just sounds like a generic, bass- heavy pop song. The lyrics, which describe a suspenseful tryst with a man, are also not that memorable. However, Swift cleverly compares her affair to Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton’s relationship, a reference that people aren’t really familiar with anymore. So props to her for embedding this unique easter egg into the lyrics.
Number One: “Gorgeous”
This song is very “old” Taylor. Swift is known for penning songs about her numerous ex-boyfriends, and “Gorgeous” is possibly about the most current ex, Tom Hiddleston. The trap-inspired 808 snare in the beat of this single was also prominently featured in Swift’s previous album 1989. Overall, this song is actually pretty enjoyable. The chorus is catchy, and the inclusion of the 80’s synth in the instrumental made the song sound more interesting.
Taylor Swift is trying to separate herself from her past by changing the sound of her music. However, Swift has still left remnants of her old self in these new songs, and the ones that are stereotypically Taylor Swift are the most successful. The quality of these singles might be iffy, but you can’t deny that reputation will be an interesting album.
