Lucy Turner : Oprah
If you’ve been living under a rock, you may have missed the 2018 Golden Globes. You also may have missed one of, if not the, most famous speech in Academy Award history. Oprah Winfrey was presented with the Cecil B. DeMille Award at the 2018 Golden Globe ceremony, hosted by Seth Meyers.
Oprah Winfrey, born Orpah, was born a bastard child in Virginia to a housemaid. Her Christian belief was a huge part of her childhood as well as her relationship to her family. She survived years of physical, verbal, and sexual abuse and responded by acting out; she eventually was forced to move in with her dad in Nashville, TN. After graduation, she started work at a local news station and worked her way through media. She eventually landed her own show as a celebrity interviewer. She continued to work becoming an actor, radio host, an author, and a philanthropist.
The annual award has been presented almost every year since 1952 by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for "outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment". Cecil B DeMille was the first recipient of the award; others include Walt Disney, Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn, and Robin Williams. However, this recent year the award made more history for recognizing Oprah Winfrey as the 2018 recipient, making her the first African American woman to receive the award.
Her acceptance speech, particularly relevant due to the fashion ‘black out’ by actors at the award show to show support for gender equality, earned a standing ovation from audience members. She spoke to young viewers preaching to them that there is a new dawn and that their future will be bright. Celebrities followed the speech with tweets of awe. No words will ever do the speech justice so here is the YouTube link, so if you love yourself whatsoever, witness this speech. #Oprah2020
