When I was little, The Wizard of Oz was most definitely my favorite movie, and I’ve been dying to see Wicked for as long as I can remember. Most years it was sold out, or I just didn’t have have the time, but I finally saw it last night and it was the most magnificent thing I’ve ever seen. From the costumes to the sets to the musical numbers, the show was absolutely fantastic.
I’ll start with my favorite aspect, which are the musical numbers. Unfortunately, I don’t have the playbill anymore so I don’t know the actors’ names, but I do know that every one of them nailed their songs. From “Popular” to “Defying Gravity”, every note was perfect, as well as the acting that went along with it.
The stage sets, although most were simple, the props played a big part in my enjoyment of the show. My favorite prop was the wizard’s head thing because it actually scared me a little at first. The head glows with red eyes and is extremely loud, but it was super cool and helped tie in the storyline from the Wizard of Oz. The stage design looked fairly simple, but it was constantly changing, helping add to the overall magical feel of the show.
Costuming for this musical was fantastic, especially Glinda’s ball gowns. They were absolutely gorgeous, and the sparkle could’ve been considered blinding. As far as the rest of the characters, the costuming was accurate for the characters, and strongly resembled that from the Wizard of Oz.
In conclusion, Wicked was absolutely amazing in every aspect. In my opinion, even if you don’t care too much for the Wizard of Oz, this musical is definitely worth seeing. It helped me understand many aspects of the storyline and gave a lot of insight into what actually happened. It’s perfect for all age groups with it’s witty nature and tame language, as well as the fun and lovable characters.
