The Mock Audition
This past week a professional dancer by the name of Phoenix Red came to Nashville School of the Arts looking for back up dancers for a new music video. I interviewed a student that is in the dance conservatory, that had the chance to experience this audition. These dancers was told that whoever makes the cuts will get the chance to travel with the artist and perform at other schools in the Nashville area. Twenty dancers auditioned. The dancers had to study the artist that they were auditioning for, as in knowing the background of the person. How does she/he dance, what do they look for in a dancer, and/or what’s there favorite type of dancing. Knowing these things gave you a better chance on making the cuts.
This was very intriguing to me. It made me wonder what it was like to be dancer auditioning for something so serious. Was it exciting or was it scary? The dancer stated that the energy in the room was dramatic, jazzy, but powerful. It made her feel more empowered and strong than nervous. “Confidence was the key in this setting,” she said. Once you catch the vibe that has been released in the room it will help you give what the judges are looking for. I decided to ask the dancer if she was dancing full out knowing that it was just a mock audition. She said, “Yes I always dance full heartedly, because you never know who is watching you.” The day that I lack on my skills is the day that I miss going on tour with a celebrity or maybe even the day I miss out on getting a full ride to college.
While I was in the dance room watching this audition I was informed that this was a real audition but the dancers didn’t know that yet. I was paying attention to their effort levels and how they would possibly change once the big news was announced. Some dancers were dancing full out already but others were just dancing as if they were comfortable because this was just a “practice mock audition.” There was plot twist though…the artist Phoenix surprised everyone at the audition. The dance teacher announced out loud, “just kidding this is a real audition.” After the announcement phoenix asked of the dancers to do the dance that they were taught again. Watching their performance was amazing. I absolutely loved it. You could see so much passion and understanding through every movement.
At the end of the audition there were eight dancers who made the cut. The dancer that I interviewed was one of the eight winners and she reminded me at the end of the interview that if you put full effort and confidence into something you will be pleased with results every time.
